Clay Pot Filtration - Irina's team from Cornu Luncii Secondary School, Romania

Our method of water filtration was CLAY POT FILTRATION.

We did this activity in many days. First, we researched about this method. We found out that it was one of the oldest methods of cleaning water, dating back over 4,000 years. It was used by ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese to improve water quality. Although simple, this method is still effective today and continues to be used in modern forms to provide safe drinking water, especially in rural area.

In our activity, we used different clay pots: one of light color and one of dark color. We used tap water and dirty water. We filled these pots with water and we waited until the next day. In both case, we could noticed some impurities on  the surface of the water.

One of my classmate did this experiment at home and the result was the same.

This method is easy to use, needs low cost, does not require electricity and it is suitable for household use.

Unfortunately, this method does not completely remote all viruses and chemical contaminants.
