EGG WHITE METHOD_ KEMALETTIN TUGCU SECONDARY SCHOOL- MERVE TACAR'S TEAM (TÜRKİYE-İSTANBUL)

BEFORE THE EXPERIMENT STUDENTS DID RESEARCH ABOUT THIS METHOD AND DECIDED TO CHOOSE WHAT KIND OF WATER THEY SHOULD USE DURING THE EXPERIMENT

EGG WHITE USE TO CLEAN WATER

There is no evidence that people originally developed the egg-white method specifically to clarify drinking water.
The earliest clearly documented use of egg white for clarifying liquids appears in early modern Europe, during 16th–17th century, mainly for food and drink (broths, wines), not water.

Egg white is used because its proteins coagulate when it is heated.

The coagulated proteins trap impurities.

The goal is clarity and refinement, not sanitation

There are scientific references showing that egg white (or egg-white proteins) can serve as a coagulant to remove suspended particles from water or wastewater systems, but these studies focus on a modified egg white or use it in combination with polymers not raw egg white alone.

Although we know egg white can not be used to to make drinkable water , we observed the coagulation process.

Let’s learn how to apply the egg white to clarify the large pieces from the water.

1.First,we crack two eggs and separate the white from the yolk.

2.We put the egg white into a bowl.

3.We stir it gently without, whippining or foaming it.

4.Then we add the egg white to the dirty water and stir slowly.

5.After mixing, we let it sit for 1 hour.

6.During this time, dirth, dust, mud and small particles in the water attach to the egg white, forming larger clumps that sink to the bottom.

7.The water at the top becomes clearer.

Egg white “cleans” water by using its proteins to bind tiny suspended particles together into heavier clumps that settle out of the water, making it clearer — but not microbiologically safe.
